The film discusses Mayan Q’eqchi’ resistance to Canadian Nickel Mining in El Estor, Guatemala. The mining claim was owned by several Canadian companies over time, namely Hudbay Minerals Inc. Hudbay committed extreme human rights violations in order to further their claim on the land. Guatemalans nonviolently violently resisted this mining. TW: rape, violence, murder.
The film came out in 2013. After watching it, there will be an update on the resistance since 2013 and trial against Hudbay, followed by discussion and questions.
BC Casa Van Isle will be there to sell delicious Guatemalan coffee ($18/bag), and discuss ways to support human rights and community organizations in Guatemala from here in Victoria.
Donations are gladly accepted but not required. All funds will go to Rights Action. Rights Action works to fund and support human rights and justice, land and environment struggles in Guatemala and Honduras
