Join us for an exciting evening of conversation with award-winning Canadian author and cartoonist Kate Beaton, in discussion with Lee Henderson on her graphic memoir, 'Ducks'! Kate Beaton's 'Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands' is an autobiographical comic chronicling the author's experience as a woman from Atlantic Canada working in the Athabasca oil sands in Alberta in the mid 2000's, as a means of paying off her student loans.

Kate Beaton's 'Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands' is an autobiographical comic chronicling the author's experience as a woman from Atlantic Canada working in the Athabasca oil sands in Alberta in the mid 2000's, as a means of paying off her student loans. The incredible graphic memoir chronicles the the harsh reality of life in the oil sands and tackles themes of resource extraction, loneliness, sexual assault and more, and was the 2023 Canada Reads Winner. Kate Beaton has also illustrated and written several children's books, including her most recent, 'Shark Girl', published in 2025.
Lee Henderson is a Canadian writer and award-winning author of multiple books, such as the story collection 'The Broken Record Technique', and the novels 'The Road Narrows As You Go' and 'The Man Game', which won the BC Book Prize and the Vancouver Book Prize in 2009. He teaches creative writing at the University of Victoria, where he now serves as the Chair and Associate Professor in the Writing Department.
