Event Description

Arts & Creative
Join prominent Canadian writers and leaders in the arts, business, and society for a national conversation on connection. An onstage conversation with prizewinning authors Marcello Di Cintio, Guy Vanderhaeghe, and Jenny Heijun Wills moderated by Shelley Youngblut, Wordfest’s CEO & Creative Ringleader, at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks. Writers’ Trust of Canada is a charitable organization that supports Canadian writers and writing – and we turned 50 this year. To mark our anniversary, we are putting on special events in cities across the country, including in Calgary. About our Authors: Marcello Di Cintio won the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing in 2012 for Walls: Travels Along the Barricades. He is a journalist and the author of six books of deeply reported nonfiction, the most recent of which is Precarious: The Lives Migrant Workers. Guy Vanderhaeghe won the Timothy Findley Award for his outstanding body of work, which already at that time in 2004, included four novels and three short story collections. He was nominated for the 2021 Atwood Gibson Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize for his tenth book, August into Winter. Jenny Heijun Wills won the 2019 Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for her memoir, Older Sister. Not Necessarily Related., and in 2024 she was nominated for the same prize for her essay collection, Everything and Nothing At All. Our Moderator: Shelley Youngblut is the CEO & Creative Ringleader of Wordfest. She was the recipient of the 2020 Calgary Award for Community Achievement in the Arts and the 2018 Rozsa Award for Arts Leadership. She also won the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award at the Western Magazine Awards. With 50 years of supporting writers as the truth-tellers of our world, Writers’ Trust of Canada believes that we need writers to help us navigate the future. Writers’ Trust beneficiaries of 50 years of literary programming will bring their ideas to stages and communities across the country with the goal of helping us see that, despite how it can feel in tumultuous times, there is more that connects us than divides us.
