Проте цього разу автори звертаються до оригінальної української міфології, у якій мавки — небезпечні та химерні лісові створіння, а не казкові героїні. Події фільму розгортаються у прадавніх лісах України під час Русалчиного тижня — магічного періоду, коли міфічні істоти виходять із Темного озера на полювання за брудними людськими душами. Група студентів-біологів вирушає в цю місцевість із науковою експедицією, ігноруючи похмурі застереження місцевих жителів. The True Myth is created by the team behind the animated hit Mavka. The Forest Song and expands the Mavka Universe. This time, however, the filmmakers return to authentic Ukrainian mythology—where mavkas are not fairy-tale heroines, but dangerous, eerie forest beings. The story unfolds in the primeval forests of Ukraine during Mermaid Week, a mystical period when mythical creatures emerge from the Dark Lake to hunt corrupted human souls. A group of biology students arrives in the area on a scientific expedition, dismissing the grim warnings of the local villagers.
