Event Description
Trapped inside a water tanker, a refugee boy's escape becomes a journey that will haunt him forever.
'Hatch' is inspired by the book Ghassan Kanafani's "Men in the Sun" (1963), a crucial work by the Palestinian writer guiding our exploration of the enduring struggles faced by displaced individuals seeking a better life. We aim to delve into the poignant journey of an 8-year-old boy from the Middle East, who alongside his mother and four fellow refugees, embark on a clandestine odyssey in a water tanker, navigating challenges crossing European borders. The narrative takes a turn as the group is caught by border patrol. The young boy, revealed as a Canadian resident, adopted by a Canadian family, clings to the ritual of immersing himself in water tanks, perplexing his new family. We adopted a subjective point of view, immersing the audience in the child's trauma. The film explores identity, displacement, and the universal human longing for connection, transcending borders and resonating with those seeking refuge. These stories occur too frequently, yet are often overlooked. We strive to convey this raw and authentic tale, highlighting its current relevance. In the face of ongoing conflicts and a worsening global situation, addressing the plight of children amid these crises becomes increasingly vital. Refugees, despite seeking solace in the West, remain entangled in traumas, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness and empathy toward those affected by war and upheaval.
