Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Carlos Lozada brings a singular blend of curiosity, empathy and precision to his analysis of political nonfiction writing in America. An opinion columnist for The New York Times, and author of The Washington Book: How to Read Politics and Politicians, Lozada gains nuanced insight into political leaders through what they reveal in their own writing. Campaign books, Supreme Court opinions, congressional reports and more, Lozada dissects the ideas shaping Washington as seen through the “fine print.” He is also the author of What Were We Thinking: A Brief Intellectual History of the Trump Era, for which his research included reading over 150 books about Trump. Born in Lima, Peru and raised between South America and California, Lozada’s insights straddle geographic and ideological borders. Before joining The New York Times in 2022, he was the managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine and was a senior editor and book critic at The Washington Post where his incisive reviews earned him the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. Lozada is a visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame’s Institute for Ethics and the Common Good and has been a Knight-Bagehot fellow at Columbia University. In 2024, he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
