Event Description
Few composers astonish quite like Felix Mendelssohn, whose prodigious brilliance emerged early and endured through a life of rare refinement and creative vitality. This concert celebrates Mendelssohn’s enduring gifts through two of his most beloved chamber works: the Piano Trio in D minor and the Octet in E-flat major, both written while he was still in his teens and early twenties.
The Piano Trio captivates with sweeping lyricism, sparkling interplay, and Mendelssohn’s trademark elegance, while the Octet—composed at just sixteen—remains one of the most remarkable feats of youth in all of classical music. Brimming with fire, contrapuntal mastery, and fairy-like effervescence, it is a work of astonishing imagination and vitality.
Comprised of exceptional faculty from the Vancouver Academy of Music, the Academy Chamber Players bring together some of the city’s finest performers in a flexible ensemble that honours both artistry and education. This performance offers a rare opportunity to experience their insight and passion in a program that pays tribute to a composer Robert Schumann once called “the Mozart of the nineteenth century.”
