Event Description
SHIFT returns on Saturday, February 7th with a live audio-visual performance and artist talk from Vancouver-based a/v artists: i+eo ⋆˚꩜。
⇧ i+eo:
Composed of IHA and ephemeral objects, i+eo is an audio-visual futurism based on the artists’ identities and experiences as queer Southeast Asian diaspora, intertwined with influences from the West Coast of Canada’s electronic and underground music scene. This project is born from the duo’s participation in MUTEK’s 2024 Incubator program, solidifying i+eo among Canada’s most promising a/v artists.
They debuted at MUTEK Montréal last year, playing an incredible immersive and transportive live set that we were fortunate to witness. We’ve been excited to have them over here in Vic ever since!
IHA is the sonic alias of Apple Cabrera- sound artist, producer, DJ, and manager of imprint Naga. Drawing from cultural memory, dreams, and shifts in perception, they bring a childlike play into the stage, whether live or on the dance floor. Their productions and live sets range from atmospheric dub, clever and playful techno, to futuristic bass music. Since beginning their sonic journey in 2021, they have released singles on labels PPRZ, Weirdoes Inc, Bass Coast Music, and Wuji. They have been featured at festivals such as Active/Passive, Bass Coast, Wonderment, and Pachena Bay (BC); Future Forest (NB), ADE (AMS), Osmosis (PDX), Honcho (PA) and Ever Afters (SFO).
Venturing into sound spatialization and audiovisual collaborations they scored the 2024
EDAA award-winning "GRWM", an original animation by Carmilla Sumantry; performed at
Lobe's Mother Cloud Festival in 4DSOUND with Michael Red, composed an experimental film presented in spatial sound at Lobe Studios with Kerr Holden, and composed the audio for i+eo's 5760+1080, audiovisual installation featured at New Forms Festival: Transform.
ephemeral objects is the alias of Michelle La (she/her) who is an interdisciplinary artist,
VJ, DJ, and producer based in Vancouver. True to her name, her creations carry this
sense of ethereality, focusing on textures and organic forms, both ephemeral and
suspended in time at once. She merges generative videos with real footage to create her
own unique, audio-reactive and abstract style where rich colours, spanning the full
spectrum, wash over the screen, striking the viewer’s mind with a strong image of the
audio-visual journey at play.
ephemeral objects has produced music videos for forward-thinking electronic music
labels, including Mood Hut and NAGA. She has performed at influential music venues and
festivals throughout British Columbia. She is also a resident of Acceleration Radio, an
open format FM radio, live stream, and events collective focusing on A/V experimentation. She curates guest appearances on Acceleration Radio, providing a platform for emerging and diverse audio and visual talents from Vancouver's underground scene. She is a guest curator for this year’s edition of New Forms Festival. In addition to her visual artistry, ephemeral objects produces ambient, experimental, noise, drone-inspired music, with her latest release on SYS Sister Sounds Unity and Wuji 001: Earth Amulets VA compilations.
Join us at Open Space on Feb. 7th for the west coast debut of i+eo's Portals set, followed by an artist talk where they will discuss their collaborative process, sonic and visual world-building, and being professionals in the live a/v space.
