Guitarist Simon Farintosh presents an evocative evening of music and visual art that bridges sound, image, and narrative in this UVic School of Music faculty concert. The program features Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Los Caprichos de Goya, a vivid musical response to Francisco Goya’s iconic prints. Visual projections of the original artworks will accompany the performance, with Liova Bueno providing English translations and short contextual remarks that illuminate the wit, critique, and imagination behind each scene. The program also includes a newly composed work by UVic School of Music alumnus, Liova Bueno, alongside Takashi Yoshimatsu’s Guitar Sonata “Sky Colour Tensor”—a luminous and expressive work that blends lyricism with contemporary colour. ABOUT THE ARTIST Simon Farintosh is an award-winning guitarist, composer, and educator based in Victoria, BC. Named one of CBC’s 30 Under 30 Classical Musicians in 2023, he is known for adventurous programming that blends classical guitar with contemporary influences such as ambient electronica. His recordings include Noctuary (2023), featuring original music for eight-string guitar, the EP Aphex Twin for Guitar (2021), which has garnered over 2 million Spotify streams, and Seascapes (2021), inspired by the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. His compositions and arrangements are published by Les Productions d’Oz, Bergmann Edition, and Musicnotes. Simon holds degrees from the University of Victoria and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and is completing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Toronto. He is the guitar instructor at UVic and director of ReVamp Guitar Academy, and currently serves as President of the Victoria Guitar Society. He performs on guitars by Martin Blackwell and Jeff Sigurdson.
