Event Description
Give your old clothes a second life! ♻️🧵✨
WHEN: April 18 2026, 1pm-4pm
WHERE: Chinatown Plaza Mall - 180 Keefer Street
Join us for an afternoon of upcycling fabric and customizing your own patches with Sunny. Turn fabric scraps and well-loved clothing into unique decorative patches. No sewing experience needed. Beginners and seasoned stitchers are all welcome!
Participants are invited to bring a non-stretch clothing item you’re okay cutting up for patches and/or a non-stretch piece you’d like to decorate. Don’t have anything to work with? No problem! Fabric will be provided, and everyone is encouraged to bring extra scraps to share and swap.
This workshop is led by Sunny Chiu, a Taiwanese immigrant-settler as well as a visual and textile artist. Sunny learned to sew from their mom and aunties when they were 4-years-old and has since developed a deep love for upcycling and customizing garments. In The Sunny Patch workshop, they hope to help you stitch new life into previously loved fabrics you’re not ready to let go of.
Building and washroom information: The entrance to Chinatown Plaza is down 6 steps or down a ramp without handrails; the doors are 31" wide and are not automatic, but are push-button activated. The bathrooms are gendered; the doors are 33" wide, not automatic and somewhat heavy. The accessible bathroom stall is 67" by 59" wide and features grab rails. The food court features seats attached to tables. There are no steps inside to the event area. Inside the mall are stairs and two elevators from ground floor leading to the upper level parkade and private offices. This workshop is mask recommended, but not scent reduced.
