Event Description
TheMangyCalf — An Evening of Live Improvised Music
The Dreampunk Piano Lounge Presents: Andrew, Cameron & Clyde
Friday, April 24 | Two Sets
TheMangyCalf is a Vancouver trio made up of musicians Andrew, Cameron, and Clyde, three artists who found each other through participation in the NOW Society, one of the city's longest-running organizations dedicated to improvisational music. They came together at 8East, an artist-run space in Vancouver's historic Chinatown committed to new music and experimental approaches, and out of that environment something singular emerged.
Their sound defies easy categorization. Drawing on classical training, punk aesthetics, and an unlikely but earnest engagement with economic theory, TheMangyCalf presents a form of free jazz improvisation grounded in decades of practice, what they call "deep truth and practical dishonesty." The music is never fixed. It lives and breathes in the moment, shaped entirely by what the musicians hear from each other in real time.
On April 24, the trio will perform two full sets of completely improvised music. Both sets are built around deep listening and responsive interplay, and each will be open to guests: other musicians are invited to join the stage when moved to do so, and to leave when they are ready. The result is something genuinely unpredictable, a living, collaborative performance that cannot be replicated.
Come ready to listen. Come ready to be surprised.
