Join us for this great 1-day watercolour workshop at our wonderful Goldfinch Arts Centre by the sea to kick off the new year! This one-day workshop offers an introdcution to materials and the basics of watercolour painting for beginners and a challenge for more experienced watercolourists to further their skills. Starting with a demo on how to paint skies, water, mountains, trees, and snow, the course will focus on composition, colour, design, painting philosophy, medium control and techniques. Individual attenion is given to each student according to his or her level. Instruction will be from 9am-12pm, followed by an hour's break for lunch, before we reconvene from 1pm-4pm. SUPPLY LIST (mention that you are taking Ed's workshop to get a 10% discount at ArtWorld, 860 Yates Street, downtown Victoria!) • Paper -140 lb Arches or Winsor & Newton cold press, rough (the instructor will have several sheets available for purchase) • Paints - Winsor & Newton or Da Vinci: Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Permanent Rose, Cadmium Yellow, Sap Green, Winsor Blue (green shade ), Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine Blue • Brushes - Sable or synthetic: 3/4" flat, 1/2" flat, #1 pointed brush, #4 pointed brush, #2 rigger brush, 1.5" glazing brush, 2" white bristle paint brush (the instructor will have these 2" bristle brushes available for purchase) • Watercolour palette • 2 water containers • Miscelleneous - salt, dish soap, masking fluid (available from instructor), knife, stapler, hair dryer, masking tape, paper towel, pencil, 12x16x0.5" Coroplast (the instructor will have Coroplast available for purchase) ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Ed Araquel, AFCA, was already a first-prize winner while a student at Art Instruction Schools in Minneapolis, Minnesota. One of his paintings was chosen for the school’s permanent collection. He further studied and attended workshops and seminars under two of America’s foremost portrait painters - John Howard Sanden and Daniel Greene. He also studied watercolours under Zoltan Szabo. In 1969 Ed Araquel established his own art & sign studio where he designed and produced award-winning displays and exhibits. He also taught commercial art and signwriting at Mohawk College. He joined Consolidated Bathurst Packaging Ltd as art Supervisor in 1976 and remained there until 1991. Ed Araquel has won several awards in almost all media - oils, watercolours and pastels, in various subjects - portraits, still-lifes and landscapes. In the 2002 Sooke Fine Arts Juried Show, he won the Best From Sooke Award, and the Jurors Choice Award. Ed won the Jurors Choice Award again in 2004 and has been consistently an award-winner at Federation Of Canadian Artist's Juried Shows. Ed now lives in Victoria, British Columbia and paints the places and faces of Southern Vancouver Island and also conducts workshops in portraits, watercolours and calligraphy. His paintings are in many galleries around Vancouver Island and Ontario. CLASS LOCATION This workshop is hosted by the Arts & Culture Colwood Society at the Goldfinch Arts Centre, a bright & modern gallery space that looks out to the Esquimalt Lagoon and the Colwood Waterfront beyond, where you will be surrounded by original artwork by local artists in an exhibition called Out of the Ordinary, which runs from January 8th through February 1st.
