What’s new with the PMP exam?
The new PMP exam changes impact the eligibility criteria, domains and topics tested, along with some changes to the question types and exam timing. The session examines the changes and gives recommendations for anyone considering taking the exam in 2026.
PMI updates the PMP exam about every 4 years to bring it in line with current project management practices. They survey project managers and other project professionals such as PMO leaders and hiring managers to determine what skills project managers should have to be useful in today’s project environment.
These latest changes were developed following a Job Task Analysis (JTA) study which evaluated new industry trends andreflect the evolving role of project managers today. The changes incorporate areas like artificial intelligence (AI) and sustainability.
Join us for this informal, highly graphical session that reviews the exam changes. We see what’s out, what new in and review the new question types. No pop-quizzes or tricky math problems to solve, just a walk through the changes and preview of what to expect on the new exam.
Speaker: Mike Griffiths
Mike Griffiths is a project management author, trainer, and consultant with the Project Management Institute (PMI). Before joining PMI, he ran a project management consulting firm and led projects across Europe, South America, Central America, and North America.
Within PMI standards, Mike chaired the Agile Practice Guide team and has contributed to the PMBOK® Guide since the 3rd Edition. He was co-chair for the 7th edition and an advisor for the most recent 8th edition. He is a former PMP® exam questionwriter and has helped shape the last two PMP Exam Content Outlines (ECOs).
This combination of hands-on project experience and direct involvement in developing PMI standards and exams allows Mike to connect real-world practices to the PMP exam concepts, and to offer practical guidance to people considering or preparing for this credential. Mike ran a study group for 20 people taking the new PMP exam pilot in January and has first hand accounts of the new question types and subject areas.
