Event Description

Join Jon Handforth for a black-&-white photographic journey through some of Earth’s most powerful landscapes shaped by ice, light, and life.
In this visually rich presentation, Calgary-based fine-art photographer Jon Handforth shares a personal exploration of some of the planet’s most compelling wild landscapes, from the Canadian Rockies to Iceland, Greenland, and the Great Bear Rainforest.
Working primarily in black and white, Jon seeks to reveal the underlying structure, mood, and emotional resonance of these places: the sculpted forms of ice and stone, the fleeting qualities of light, and the presence of wildlife shaped by powerful natural forces.
A central theme of the talk is the legacy of ice. Much of the terrain we now experience as permanent wilderness has been shaped – and in some cases only recently revealed – by glaciers. Through photographs and stories from the field, Jon explores how ice continues to influence landscapes, ecosystems, and the way we experience the natural world today.
The presentation also reflects on the long human connection to these environments, from early migration across the Bering land bridge to Indigenous traditions, northern legends, and cultural relationships with landscapes shaped by ice.
Both artistic and reflective, Wild Earth: Ice, Light, and Life invites viewers to look beyond familiar scenery and consider the deeper forces that have shaped the places we love to photograph.
Ticket price includes Coffee & Pastries.
