AI as a force multiplier for hard planetary problems Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming the most consequential general-purpose technology of the century. Climate change, meanwhile, remains one of the hardest real-world tests of whether that power actually translates into impact. Public discourse tends to swing between two extremes: AI as an ecological villain—devouring energy and water—or AI as a techno-savior poised to solve everything from batteries to floods. This salon takes a more demanding stance. Rather than cataloguing applications, we will interrogate where AI genuinely bends the curve on physical-world problems—and where it mostly adds narrative heat. Climate will serve as the case study, but not the constraint. We’ll examine questions like: • Why has AI clearly worked in some domains (e.g. remote sensing, forecasting, optimization), but struggled in others? • Where are the real bottlenecks: algorithms, data, institutions, incentives, or deployment physics? • How should technologists, researchers, and investors decide when AI is the right lever—and when it isn’t? • How do we reconcile AI’s growing footprint with its potential to reduce emissions elsewhere? This is not a showcase of breakthroughs. It is a conversation about judgment, leverage, and honest accounting—intended for people who are trying to decide where to place their time, talent, and attention. Format A 90-minute, Chatham House rule round-table. We’ll open with a 5-minute provocation, break into facilitated discussion, and close with shared “next actions” you can take into your work or research. Who should join?
