Event Description
Want to try out a new painting technique?
Gouache is a water-based paint known as "opaque water colour" because it combines the matte, velvety finish of water colour with the opacity of acrylics. The ink resist technique is a process where a material (we will be using gouache) is painted onto paper first, and then waterproof Indian ink is brushed over the entire surface.
After the ink dries the painting is washed with water, and the top layer of gouache dissolves, the excess ink flows off to reveal the final image. The result is a dramatic, high-contrast image that resembles a woodblock or linocut print. To get your creative juices flowing, search "gouache Indian ink resist."
Having a graphic image in mind in advance will help to make sure your time is as productive as possible.
This YouTube video demonstrates the technique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCL7w6ZHNLc
Participants will receive a handout with instructions so you can do this activity again on your own (or come back to the Art Hub, where we have the materials!)
We will be gathering at the Community Art Hub on Friday, March 27th from 6-8 pm to learn this ink resist technique together.
This event is recommended for those who are over 16 years of age (or 12+ with an adult). We'll provide all necessary materials and an apron to keep your clothes clean.
The registration fee is based on a sliding scale of $25-$35 payable by e-transfer. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. If you need a subsidized spot to participate, please email alterartssociety@gmail.com. No disclosure required.
Registration is required with a max of 8 participants. Please email us at alterartssociety@gmail.com to secure your spot.
