On Saturday 20 June, Sooke’s history and culture will fly across the airwaves as Museums on the Air takes place on the grounds of the Sooke Region Museum. This worldwide radio event began in the UK in 2002 and has remained internationally popular since then. Every year, amateur operators all over the world set up portable radio equipment at local museums and contact each other to bring attention to regional history.

The event is hosted by the Sooke Amateur Radio Association (SARA). SARA’s purpose is to promote amateur radio in the community, both as a rewarding hobby and as a vital component of emergency preparedness. Members gather on air every month and at other events to discuss radio and to hone their skills.

This event is your chance to discover the wide world of amateur radio and to learn from other museums in far-flung places. The medium of radio permits the forging of connections and the sharing of culture across wide distances. You can listen in to conversations spanning thousands of kilometres and hear local culture and history become global at the flick of a switch!
