Event Description

“A Tribute to Buena Vista Social Club is back to “The Coda”! After a historical evening a few month ago for a New Year’s Eve celebration, we’re back for those who couldn’t get a spot and those that left wanting to live this experience again with Pablo Cardenas and The Westcoast Cuban Orchestra. This will be another memorable night of music with world class Cuban pianist Pablo Cardenas and The Westcoast Cuban Orchestra performing a repertoire that even novices to traditional cuban music will be familiar with, timeless and evocative songs that became all time classics that will never die. The incredible Christina Morrison will be hosting a dance class before the band starts, and performing a choreography with her dance group “Salsa Caliente” at break time. Buena Vista Social Club got established in 1996. The project was organized by World Circuit executive Nick Gold, produced by American guitarist Ry Cooder and directed by Juan de Marcos González. They named the group after the homonymous members' club in the Buenavista quarter of Havana, a popular music venue in the 1940s. To showcase the popular styles of the time, such as son, bolero and danzón, they recruited a dozen veteran musicians, some of whom had been retired for many years. The group's eponymous album was recorded in March 1996 and released in September 1997, quickly becoming an international success. Pablo Cardenas is a Cuban Jazz pianist, composer, music educator and arranger with different influences like Afro-Cuban, Latin jazz, Jazz Fusion, Modern Jazz, Classical and world music. He studied classical performance at the Superior Institute of Arts in Havana, Cuba. Since the 2000s he has been performing in music festivals in Havana and internationally. He has been residing in Canada since 2011 where he created different music projects as The Westcoast Cuban Orchestra, making a great contribution to the development of the Afro-Cuban music and jazz scene in the area, performing at the most important venues and festivals around, also nd collaborating with many accomplished musicians like Canadian treasures Dee Daniel and Denzal Sinclair. Pablo has been also collaborating with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra in the last years.
