Event Description

On May 17th Ready Set Sound presents a Sunday Matinee show at The Coda with Rae Spoon, Pink Snail and Ghostly Hounds. Rae Spoon is a musician, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and author. They have released thirteen solo albums spanning folk, country, indie rock, and electronic genres and published three books (Arsenal Pulp Press). Rae has been nominated for two Polaris Prizes, a Lambda Literary Award, and a Western Canadian Music Award. They have toured internationally (Canada, Europe, the USA, Australia, China). Rae is a non-binary, trans artist who lives with multiple disabilities. Rae’s upcoming album, Hyper Country (2026), celebrates their return to country music. Assigned Country Singer At Birth, an album that is equally subversive and relatable, a testament to the fact that country music is as expansive as the people who are connected to it. Songs about trans folks, harm reduction, disability, inclusion, religious trauma, solidarity and opposing colonial land occupation may seem antithetical to traditional country, but they are as much a part of Spoon’s experiences as love songs, trucks and beer. Pink Snail is a funeral with birthday cake. An ode to birth death as a choral punk frenzy. Perfectly accessible Singsongs ruined by down-tuned acoustic guitar, bombastic math metal drumming and a choir in 3 part harmony; spewing hooks about grief, sex-sads, fast-food and a gratefulness to be alive. Between the syncopated riff raff and dissonant harmonic moves, the closest comparison is either Converge subbing as Fionna Apple's backing band, or Meshuggah cosplaying as Bare Naked Ladies for their Halloween bands as bands. A hodgepodge of Pop Song form, Heavy Drum breaks, Creamy Choral chords and Mathed out riffs you might as well toss out yr calculator to fully enjoy; pinksnail is the Chorale Pop/Math Punk mashup no one asked for, but if you chug yr triple triple from timmies fast enough, you might actually appreciate the effort. Ghostly Hounds is the soulful folk-noir and old-time project of Francesca Mirai – a singer-songwriter and banjo player based in the Lekwungen Territory, colonially known as Victoria, BC. Drawing inspiration from many genres, Francesca has become known for their unique vocals, captivating audiences with a clear, soaring range, powerful projection, and just the right amount of grit, coalescing elegantly with traditional and modern banjo instrumentals. Formed in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal in 2015, Ghostly Hounds has toured extensively across Canada, the UK, and Ireland – including a 2025 tour capped by a performance at England’s Red Rooster Festival. With a “double take”- inducing performance often described as “haunting” or “enchanting”, Francesca’s deeply personal songwriting has earned adoration from audiences across North America and Europe. Ghostly Hounds released their debut album Creature in 2017, followed by In the Rubble in 2022. Their latest single, Lonely Winter, was released in October 2024.
